Welcome to Sensory Studios™
This is a resource hub for understanding how your sensory system affects your everyday life.
We explore the full sensory spectrum—sight, sound, touch, movement, and the hidden senses that shape your focus, mood, energy, and relationships.
Whether you're neurodivergent, highly sensitive, burned out, or just curious, Sensory Studios helps you make sense of your body’s signals, find tools that actually work, and build a life that feels more steady, creative, and real.
What Is Sensory? The way you experience the world is unique to you. Every sound, texture, movement, and light you encounter is filtered through your sensory system—your body’s way of taking in and interpreting everything around you. Sensory processing is what makes you feel the world. When this system works in harmony, life feels manageable, even joyful. But when it doesn’t? It can feel overwhelming, like you’re drowning in noise, textures, or emotions you can’t quite name—or even like you’re not feeling enough of the world to feel present and alive. For many adults, this can create stress, confusion, and even shame. You might wonder: • “Why do I feel so drained when I’m around too much noise or light?” • “Why do I crave certain sensations, like deep pressure or movement, just to feel okay?” • “Why does life feel harder than it should?” Here’s the truth: sensory processing shapes everything—how you move through your day, how you connect with others, and how you feel about yourself. When your sensory needs aren’t being met, it’s not your fault, and you’re not alone. What Are the Senses? You’re likely familiar with the five senses—sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell—but there are actually 8 systems at work: We Have 8 Senses Vision (Visual Sense): Your ability to perceive and process light, color, and motion. It's integral to how we interact with and navigate the external world. Hearing (Auditory Sense): The perception of sound, allowing us to process communication, music, and environmental cues. Smell (Olfactory Sense): A key sensory input that directly connects to memory and emotion through the brain's limbic system. Taste (Gustatory Sense): Closely tied to smell, taste helps us experience flavors, detect spoiled food, and savor nourishment. Touch (Tactile Sense): This sense provides feedback about pressure, texture, temperature, and pain, directly connecting us to the physical world. Proprioception (Body Position Sense): The sense of where your body parts are in space without looking. It’s what allows you to touch your nose with your eyes closed or walk without watching your feet. Vestibular Sense (Balance and Spatial Orientation): Located in the inner ear, this sense helps you maintain balance, posture, and coordination. Interoception (Internal Bodily Awareness): The lesser-known but profoundly important sense that monitors internal body signals, such as hunger, thirst, temperature, and emotional states. Why Sensory Processing Matters Your sensory system is always working. It’s not something you “turn off.” It influences everything. • Relationships: Feeling irritable or withdrawn around others might not be emotional—it might be sensory. Loud environments, physical closeness, or unexpected touch can create stress without you even realizing it. • Energy and Focus: Sensory overload can drain your energy, while sensory-seeking needs might leave you restless or unfocused. • Daily Routines: Sensory challenges show up in the small things—like struggling with clothing textures, needing quiet to concentrate, or craving a specific kind of movement to feel balanced. • Emotional Well-Being: When your sensory system is dysregulated, it can amplify anxiety, frustration, and exhaustion, leaving you feeling disconnected from yourself and others. Sensory processing isn’t just about how you feel—it’s about how you live. It shapes the way you connect with the world, your loved ones, and yourself. Why Adults Are Often Left Behind For years, sensory processing challenges have been framed as something children experience. But the reality is, sensory needs don’t disappear as you grow up—they change, evolve, and show up in new ways. Yet, most resources are designed for kids. Adults are left without the tools, language, or understanding to figure out what’s happening and why—and that can feel isolating. It’s not fair. And it’s not okay. That’s why I created Sensory Studios: to fill this gap and offer a space where adults can explore their sensory worlds, feel validated, and create lives that feel truly supportive. How Sensory Studios Can Help If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, misunderstood, or out of sync with the world, you’re not alone. Sensory Studios is here to help you: • Understand Your Sensory Needs: Discover what soothes or overstimulates your system. • Build Practical Tools: Create supportive routines, environments, and strategies. • Reconnect with Yourself: Feel more grounded, calm, and confident in your day-to-day life. This isn’t about “fixing” yourself. It’s about learning how to honor your sensory needs so you can live with ease, connection, and authenticity. Ready to start your sensory journey? Let’s explore it together.
About Kat
Greetings, sweet sensory-beings!
I’m Kat, a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA/L) and the founder of Sensory Studios™.
I blend clinical training in sensory processing, executive functioning, and energy management with lived experience of trauma, neurodivergence, and chronic illness. My work isn’t about fixing people. It’s about creating the kinds of tools I spent years searching for—practical, sensory-rooted support for sensitive adults moving through a world that often expects them to override their own needs
I first discovered sensory integration not in a textbook, but in a school where I worked as a teacher’s aide. They had a sensory room—dim lighting, crash pads, music, a swing. Kids who were melting down weren’t punished; they were met with options. That room changed everything for me. It was the first time I saw regulation treated as a right, not a reward. Sensory Studios is my version of that space—for grown-ups who never got that kind of support.
Thank you for stopping by.
Make yourself at home.
